Overview

This is a classic piece of American 'Carnival Glass,' featuring a shimmering, iridescent marigold finish over an intricate molded basketweave pattern.

Story

In the early 1900s, American glassmakers discovered that spraying metallic salts onto hot pressed glass created a rainbow-like sheen that mimicked the incredibly expensive Favrile glass made by Louis Comfort Tiffany.

Maker / Origin

The Fenton Art Glass Company, founded in 1905, was the pioneer of iridescent glass in America. They were masters of the 'pressed glass' technique, using heavy iron molds to create complex patterns…

Condition & Value

The iridescence appears well-preserved without significant 'rubbing' or wear to the metallic finish. The handle attachment points look secure, though the buyer should check the ruffled rim for tiny chips which are common in pressed glass. Excellent condition maintains the modest market value.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
