Overview
A classic example of a 'patent medicine' bottle, featuring a rectangular body with chamfered corners and a recessed panel for embossed lettering. This specific shape and the visible partial text are iconic of the Victorian era's booming medicinal tonic industry.
Story
Binghamton, NY was once the world's 'parlor city' of patent medicine. Dr. S. Andral Kilmer claimed this tonic could cure everything from liver disease to 'female weakness.' It was actually mostly alcohol and sugar, sold by the millions.
Maker / Origin
Dr. S. Andral Kilmer was a real physician, but his brother Jonas and nephew Willis were the marketing geniuses who turned 'Swamp Root' into a global empire. They built one of the tallest buildings in Binghamton and even owned a Kentucky Derby-winning horse named Exterminator.
Condition & Value
The bottle shows significant 'cloudiness' or mineral staining from being buried. There are no visible large cracks, but the surface has a rough texture typical of 'dug' glass. This patina is often loved by collectors for its rainbow-like sheen. Condition reduces value for those seeking mint glass but adds character for decor.
