Overview
This charming, footed metal trinket box features a high-relief portrait of a lady in 18th-century court dress, reminiscent of Marie Antoinette, framed by a delicate border of roses. The sides are adorned with lush Art Nouveau floral scrolls and a blank heart-shaped cartouche on the front, designed for a personalized monogram.
Story
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a wave of nostalgia for the lost elegance of the French court swept through Victorian and Edwardian society. This pocket-sized treasure chest allowed everyday women to keep a piece of that romanticized, aristocratic fantasy on their dressing tables.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, boxes of this style were widely produced by metal casting workshops in France, Germany, and later Japan for the global novelty market. These workshops specialized in affordable luxury, using white metal alloys to replicate the heavy, expensive silver-plated casket boxes favored by the wealthy elite.
Condition & Value
The box is in good antique condition with a lovely aged patina. The original fabric lining is missing from the interior, and there is minor wear to the silver-toned finish, exposing the darker base metal underneath. The hinge remains functional and the feet are intact.
