Overview
This is a beautiful hexagonal porcelain planter decorated in the Famille Rose (Fencai) palette, featuring hand-painted narrative scenes of figures in a garden setting. The six-sided form rises from corner bracket feet to a wide, flat rim decorated with a classic iron-red key-fret and ruyi-head border.
Story
During the late 19th century, Chinese scholars surrounded themselves with miniature natural worlds. This planter was designed to hold a prized bonsai or orchid, bringing the harmony of nature directly onto a scholar's desk.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, this piece was produced in the historic kiln city of Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of the world. The artisans here worked in specialized workshops, passing down secret glaze recipes and brush techniques through generations of family guilds.
Condition & Value
There is a highly visible vertical hairline crack running down the center of one of the main illustrated panels, which appears to go through to the interior. The rim shows minor gilt wear and typical firing imperfections, and the unglazed base has expected soil staining and wear.
