Overview
A finely detailed Chinese hanging scroll painting on silk depicting an elegant garden estate with figures, pavilions, and blossoming trees. It features a signature attributing the work to the famous Jesuit court painter Giuseppe Castiglione (known in China as Lang Shining), written as 'Haixi Chen Lang Shining Hui' (Painted by the Western Vassal, Lang Shining).
Story
In 1715, an Italian Jesuit missionary arrived in Beijing and forever changed Chinese imperial art. Giuseppe Castiglione fused Western perspective and shading with traditional Chinese ink painting, creating a style that captivated three Qing emperors. This scroll captures that legendary cross-cultural aesthetic.
Maker / Origin
Giuseppe Castiglione (1688–1766), serving under the Chinese name Lang Shining, was a Milanese Jesuit brother who became a favored court painter to the Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong emperors. He pioneered a unique hybrid style of painting that blended European chiaroscuro and linear perspective with Chinese materials and brushwork.
Condition & Value
The scroll appears to be in good overall condition with some light creasing, minor surface dust, and age-appropriate toning to the silk support. The mounting is intact, and the colors remain relatively vibrant. Excellent preservation of the silk face helps maintain its value.
