Overview
A pair of highly detailed, life-sized bird sculptures—a Northern Mockingbird and a Blue Jay—hand-carved from basswood and mounted on natural wood bases. These pieces feature intricate 'burning' techniques to simulate the delicate texture of individual feathers.
Story
Reverend Jack Drake was a small-town minister whose 'hobby' reached the highest levels of American power. In 1976, President Gerald Ford chose Drake’s carvings to serve as the centerpieces for a prestigious White House state dinner.
Maker / Origin
Reverend Hershel Mark 'Jack' Drake (1910–1985) was a Baptist minister in Carlsbad, New Mexico, who became one of the most respected wildlife carvers of the 20th century. His work is characterized by an obsession with realism, often spending hundreds of hours on a single specimen to ensure anatomical perfection.
Condition & Value
The carvings appear to be in excellent original condition with no visible chips to the delicate beaks or tails. The oil paint remains vibrant, and the natural wood bases show no signs of cracking or woodworm. Preservation of the fine feather detailing is key to maintaining their value.
