Overview
This is a classic German bisque-headed socket doll featuring the highly popular '390' mold by Armand Marseille. Standing at an impressive size 12 (approximately 28 inches), she features a beautifully painted porcelain face, weighted sleep eyes, and an open mouth revealing tiny molded teeth.
Story
In the late 1800s, Thuringia, Germany, became the toy capital of the world. Armand Marseille, an emigrant from Russia, established his factory there and revolutionized the industry by mass-producing exceptionally high-quality porcelain doll heads that captured the hearts of children globally.
Maker / Origin
Armand Marseille was one of the most prolific and successful doll makers in history, operating from 1885 until the 1930s. Unlike competitors who made entire dolls, Marseille specialized in firing exquisite bisque heads, which were then paired with composition bodies made by other German firms. His '390' mold became the absolute gold standard of the Edwardian doll industry.
Condition & Value
The bisque head appears free of major cracks or chips in the photos, and the sleep eyes function well. There is typical light dust, minor paint wear on the eyelids, and the outfit/wig appear to be later replacements or vintage additions rather than original to the doll. Excellent condition of the porcelain head commands a premium.
