Overview
A fine bone china cup and saucer set featuring the colorful coat of arms for Newcastle on Tyne, including the iconic seahorses and motto. This set was specifically manufactured for the local retailer Townsend & Co., making it a localized piece of Edwardian 'crested ware' history.
Story
Edwardian travelers were obsessed with collecting 'crested ware' as souvenirs of their seaside holidays. This set carries the motto 'Fortiter Defendit Triumphans'—Triumphing by Brave Defense—a nod to the city's resilient history.
Maker / Origin
E. Brain & Co. operated the famous Foley Works in Fenton and was renowned for high-quality bone china. They were one of the few firms allowed to use the 'Foley' name after a legal dispute with Shelley Potteries, eventually acquiring the Coalport brand in the 1950s.
Condition & Value
The set appears to be in very good condition with minimal wear to the gold rim. There are no visible cracks or significant 'crazing' in the glaze, which often plagues pieces of this age. Condition is excellent for its age.
