Overview
This is an extensive 82-piece service of Franciscan Ware in the beloved 'Silver Pine' pattern, featuring a cool, mist-blue glaze adorned with delicate silver-grey pine needles, pinecones, and platinum trim. Produced during the height of California's mid-century modern design movement, this earthenware set epitomizes the casual yet elegant lifestyle of post-war America.
Story
In 1954, California's Gladding, McBean & Co. launched 'Silver Pine' to capture the breezy, indoor-outdoor lifestyle of the West Coast. Its minimalist pinecone motif brought a touch of the Sierra Nevada mountains directly to suburban dining tables.
Maker / Origin
Originally a producer of sewer pipes and architectural terra cotta, Gladding, McBean & Co. pivoted to dinnerware during the Great Depression, launching the 'Franciscan' line in 1934. They became a powerhouse of California design, famous for their hand-painted 'Desert Rose' and 'Apple' patterns, as well as their sleek, modernist shapes that defined mid-century tables across the country.
Condition & Value
The set appears to be in very good vintage condition with bright glazes and intact patterns. Some minor wear to the platinum rims is common for this pattern if it was machine-washed, and earthenware of this era is prone to fine glaze crazing.
