Overview
This is a Chinese hanging scroll painting on silk depicting a lively narrative scene with figures in a garden landscape. It bears an apocryphal signature and seal of the famous Jesuit court painter Giuseppe Castiglione, known in China as Lang Shining, who served three Qing emperors.
Story
In 1715, an Italian Jesuit missionary arrived in Beijing and forever changed Chinese court art. Giuseppe Castiglione blended European perspective with traditional Chinese ink painting. This later tribute piece captures that unique East-meets-West courtly style.
Maker / Origin
Giuseppe Castiglione (1688–1766), known as Lang Shining, was an Italian Jesuit lay brother who became a highly favored court painter under the Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong emperors. His signature style synthesized Western realism, shading, and perspective with traditional Chinese materials and subjects.
Condition & Value
The painting shows visible signs of age, including horizontal creasing consistent with rolling, minor staining, and overall toning/darkening of the silk. There is some minor pigment loss in the white blossoms.
