In the late 1800s, traveling lawyers needed a way to pack up their massive law libraries without emptying the shelves. This modular system allowed them to move books room-to-room, or city-to-city, still packed inside their protective wooden crates.
Maker / Origin
The Globe-Wernicke Company of Cincinnati, Ohio, became the undisputed king of this design after acquiring the Wernicke System in 1899. Their patented interlocking mechanism and metal side bands set the gold standard for office modularity, fiercely competing with rivals like the Macey Company.
