Overview
This striking mid-century ceramic horse figurine captures the bold, stylized aesthetic of 1950s American decorative arts. Featuring a high-gloss black glaze contrasted with brilliant, reflective gold-leaf accents on the saddle, mane, tail, and hooves, it is completed by a brass-tone ball chain bridle that adds a touch of playful, tactile dimension.
Story
Post-war American homes in the 1950s craved drama and optimism, sparking a massive trend for stylized animal figurines. This horse, with its flashy gold saddle and real metal chain bridle, was designed to catch the light on a living room TV credenza.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, this piece is highly characteristic of mid-century California or Ohio art potteries like Lane & Co. of Van Nuys or Royal Copley. These workshops specialized in affordable luxury, using slip-casting molds and hand-applied metallic overglazes to bring high-style glamour to the growing American middle class.
Condition & Value
The figurine shows some expected shelf wear on the unglazed bottoms of the hooves, and minor rubbing to the gold luster on the tips of the hooves. The brass-tone ball chain bridle is intact and original, which is rare as these are often lost over time. Overall in very good vintage condition with no visible chips or cracks.
