Overview

This is a hand-carved agate snuff bottle featuring intricate lace-like fortification and crazy-lace inclusions. Hollowed through a tiny neck opening, it comes complete with a yellowish stone stopper collar and a bone or horn applicator spoon. These intimate personal objects were crafted to hold powdered tobacco, designed as tactile tactile status symbols held directly in the palm.

Story

When tobacco arrived in China in the late 16th century, smoking it was banned by imperial decree, but taking finely ground snuff was permitted as medicinal. Craftspeople responded by inventing the snuff bottle, turning a functional container into a high-art form prized by Qing dynasty elites.

Maker / Origin

Snuff bottle carving was a specialized lapidary art centered in Beijing, Guangzhou, and Suzhou. Master lapidaries studied individual stone nodules for weeks, strategically planning their cuts to highlight natural banding, moss inclusions, or color variations without fracturing the stone during the arduous hollowing process.

Condition & Value

The bottle appears structurally intact with lovely surface polish and no major visible cracks. The stopper has detached from the spoon cork assembly, which is very common; re-attaching the stopper disc to the cork plug is a simple restoration. Overall good antique condition.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
