Overview
This is an exquisite, hand-carved white alabaster table lamp designed in the architectural style of a Mughal monument, reminiscent of the Taj Mahal's iconic domes and minarets. It features intricate openwork lattice carving (known as jali) that allows light to cast dramatic, patterned shadows when illuminated from within.
Story
Agra artisans have carved local stone for centuries. This lamp was created as a high-end Grand Tour souvenir, capturing the romantic Mughal architecture of the Taj Mahal to bring exotic, glowing ambiance into Western mid-century homes.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, this piece was crafted by skilled stone artisans in Agra, India, home of the Taj Mahal. These craftsmen belong to multi-generational family guilds that trace their lineage directly back to the imperial stone-carvers commissioned by Emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century.
Condition & Value
The alabaster body appears largely intact with minor surface wear and dust in the crevices. There is some slight discoloration to the metal hanging loops and chains, which is typical for its age. The electrical cord is a modern replacement; ensuring it is safely wired is key, as original or poorly replaced wiring can lower the value.
