Overview
This is a beautiful, vintage double-deck set of Mexican playing cards featuring striking pre-Columbian Aztec iconography. Produced by the historic Clemente Jacques firm, the court cards depict stylized Aztec deities, warriors, and nobility in vibrant, traditional earth tones, while the card backs showcase intricate geometric patterns inspired by ancient Mesoamerican architecture.
Story
In 1887, a French immigrant named Clemente Jacques arrived in Mexico and revolutionized local printing. He introduced these Mesoamerican designs to celebrate Mexico's rich indigenous heritage through everyday tabletop gaming.
Maker / Origin
Clemente Jacques y Cía is one of Mexico's most historic brands, famous not only for introducing canned jalapeños to the world but also for its highly successful printing division. Established in the late 19th century, the company became the premier manufacturer of playing cards and lottery games (Lotería) in Mexico, blending European printing technology with deeply rooted Mexican cultural themes.
Condition & Value
The visible cards appear to be in excellent, crisp condition with no obvious creasing, staining, or edge wear.
