Overview

A large, round serving platter, known as a 'chop plate,' featuring a central botanical motif of purple berries and stylized leaves accented with gold filigree.

Story

During the mid-20th century, pieces like this weren't always found in department stores; instead, they often arrived at the front door via the 'Jewel Tea' man.

Maker / Origin

The Hall China Company, founded in 1903, revolutionized the industry with their 'single-fire' process, which fused the body and glaze together at 2,400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Condition & Value

The platter appears to be in excellent vintage condition. The gold rim shows very little of the 'rubbing' or wear common in pieces of this age, and the central decal remains vibrant. Excellent preservation of the gold accents commands the higher end of the price range.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
