Overview
This is a classic 18-note mechanical music box housed in a transparent acrylic case, specifically designed to showcase the 'mechanical magic' of the movement. It features a gold-tone hand-crank mechanism that allows the user to control the tempo of the iconic 'Happy Birthday To You' melody.
Story
In 1893, two Kentucky sisters wrote a simple classroom greeting called 'Good Morning to All.' By a twist of fate and a change of lyrics, it became the most famous song in the world. For decades, this six-note tune was a copyright fortress, earning millions in royalties until a 2016 court ruling finally set it free into the public domain.
Maker / Origin
The movement was almost certainly made by Sankyo Seiki, a Japanese company founded in 1946 with the goal of becoming the 'Switzerland of the Orient.' They succeeded beyond imagination, eventually producing over 90% of the world's music box movements and transitioning from hand-tuned crafts to the precision automation seen through this clear case.
Condition & Value
The acrylic appears clear with no major yellowing or deep scratches, and the gold-tone plating on the movement remains bright. The label is intact, which is a plus for collectors of small musical novelties. Excellent condition for a modern collectible.
