Dating back to the Ming Dynasty, these toys were originally used by street vendors to attract customers. By the 1920s, they became a global sensation, captivating both Chinese children and Western tourists with their haunting, whistling sounds.

Maker / Origin

While this piece does not bear a specific maker's signature, it was produced by skilled traditional toy artisans in China. These craftsmen specialized in bamboo and wood turning, creating lightweight, perfectly balanced instruments designed to withstand the high-velocity friction of spinning ropes.

Condition & Value

The diabolo shows honest wear consistent with age and use, including light scuffing on the wood and minor fading to the red paper label. There are no apparent structural cracks in the delicate bamboo wheels, which is excellent as splits greatly reduce the acoustic value.
