A grand, approximately 46.5 cm Japanese porcelain charger decorated in the elaborate Kinrande (gold brocade) palette. The central medallion depicts figures on horseback journeying across a bridge before snow-capped Mount Fuji, framed by a broad geometric border alternating with dynamic phoenix (hoo) medallions and diaper patterns in underglaze blue, overglaze enamels, and gilt.
Story
Arita artisans in 18th-century Japan mastered multiple high-heat firings to unite cobalt underglaze with vibrant enamels and rich gold leaf. Chargers of this massive size served as dramatic centerpieces for elite banquet halls.
Maker / Origin
Produced in the famed ceramic center of Arita in Hizen Province, where porcelain production in Japan first began in the early 17th century. The kilns developed sophisticated division-of-labor workshops where master painters applied fine overglaze enamels and gilding over traditional underglaze blue grounds.
Condition & Value
