An authentic Japanese shin-hanga woodblock print titled 'Nikko Kaido' (Nikko Highway) by master landscape artist Kawase Hasui. Dated Showa 5 (1930) in the lower left margin, this evocative composition depicts a lone traveler beneath towering cryptomeria (cedar) trees dappled with sunlight.
Story
Published in 1930 Tokyo, this print captures the centuries-old cedar-lined highway to Nikko's shrines. Hasui used deep greens and shafting light to evoke a timeless, poetic solitude during Japan's rapid pre-war modernization.
Maker / Origin
Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) was a towering figure in the Shin-Hanga ('New Prints') movement, later designated a Living National Treasure by the Japanese government. Collaborating with publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, Hasui revitalized traditional landscape printmaking by fusing classical ukiyo-e craft with Western naturalism and subtle play of atmospheric light.
Condition & Value
The print shows strong, unfaded color saturation with excellent bleed-through on the verso. There is minor toning and rough handling/fraying along the outer deckle margins, but the image area itself appears well-preserved.
