Overview
This is a charming, stylized wooden wall plaque depicting a whimsical giraffe adorned with a colorful saddle. Crafted from a single piece of flat-cut pine or similar softwood, it features hand-painted details with bold black outlines and a wonderfully expressive, sleepy-eyed expression.
Story
During the post-war baby boom, designers turned away from stuffy, serious decor to create bright, imaginative spaces for children. This sleepy-eyed fellow was made to bring a touch of safari magic directly into a mid-century nursery.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, this piece is highly characteristic of the whimsical wooden nursery and kitchen decor popularized by artists like Kay Bojesen in Scandinavia and various folk-art workshops across the United States during the 1960s and 70s. These workshops focused on accessible, hand-finished wooden goods that bridged the gap between mass production and studio craft.
Condition & Value
The plaque is in good vintage condition. There is minor paint loss and rubbing along the outer edges, particularly on the ears and hooves, as well as some light scuffs on the back consistent with wall mounting.
