Overview
A striking pair of sterling silver dangle earrings featuring teardrop-shaped inlays of vibrant abalone shell. The upper portion of each teardrop is decorated with an intricate, textured pattern of raised silver granules, creating a beautiful contrast with the smooth, iridescent shell below.
Story
Centuries ago, Aztec artisans revered abalone as a sacred gift from the sea. In the 20th century, Mexican silversmiths revived this ancient connection, pairing the ocean's natural neon colors with brilliant sterling silver.
Maker / Origin
While these earrings do not bear a visible signature, they are crafted in the distinct tradition of Taxco, Mexico. Taxco became a global epicenter for silver jewelry in the 1930s under the influence of American designer William Spratling, who helped local workshops blend indigenous motifs with modern design.
Condition & Value
The earrings appear to be in very good vintage condition. The abalone shell inlays show excellent luster with no visible cracks or chips, and the silver has a gentle, natural patina that enhances the textured details. Polishing is not recommended as it could remove the intentional dark oxidation in the recesses.
