Overview
This is a charming pair of framed botanical prints featuring lush floral bouquets, including tulips, peonies, irises, and roses. They are high-quality mid-century offset lithographic reproductions of the legendary botanical illustrations by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, often called the 'Raphael of Flowers'.
Story
In the early 1800s, Pierre-Joseph Redouté was the official court artist to Marie Antoinette and later Empress Josephine. He painted the rare blooms of Malmaison, capturing a golden age of botany. These prints carry that royal legacy into modern homes.
Maker / Origin
Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759–1840) was a Belgian painter and botanist who revolutionized botanical illustration in Paris. He perfected the stipple engraving technique, which allowed for incredibly subtle gradations of color. His patron, Empress Josephine, amassed one of the greatest rose gardens in history specifically for him to document.
Condition & Value
The prints appear to be in good vintage condition with no obvious water damage or severe fading. The frames show minor scuffs and wear consistent with age, and the mats show very light toning. Good condition keeps them at the higher end of the decorative market.
