Overview
A pair of exquisite French opaline glass 'Hen on Nest' covered salt cellars or trinket dishes, featuring a delicate, semi-translucent quality. One dish displays a soft pink hue while the other shows a classic blue-white opalescent tone, both bearing the molded Vallerysthal signature on the interior base.
Story
Crafted in the historic region of Lorraine, France, these charming hens were more than just table decor. In the late 1800s, they served as individual salt cellars or mustard pots, bringing a touch of countryside whimsy to elegant European dining tables.
Maker / Origin
Founded in 1707, the Vallerysthal glassworks became legendary for its high-quality pressed glass and exceptional opaline colors. Following the Franco-Prussian War, the firm merged with Portieux, creating some of the most sought-after decorative glass novelty items in Europe.
Condition & Value
The glass appears to be in good condition with no major cracks visible. There is some typical dirt and residue in the crevices and interior bottom of the blue-white nest, which is common for pressed glass of this age and can be gently cleaned.
