Overview
An exceptionally large, 44cm porcelain charger decorated in the Nabeshima style with a dense, swirling green 'seigaiha' (blue ocean wave) pattern. It features meticulously hand-painted mythical 'kirin' (qilin) and auspicious treasures in overglaze enamels and gold, while the reverse bears a classic underglaze blue floral scroll and an apocryphal Chenghua mark.
Story
Created during Japan's late imperial era, this monumental charger revives the exclusive aesthetic of Nabeshima ware, once reserved solely for the Shogun. Its dense wave pattern represents a wish for eternal peace and resilience.
Maker / Origin
While bearing an apocryphal Chinese Ming Dynasty 'Daming Chenghua Nian Zhi' mark (a common practice in high-end Japanese porcelain to denote quality), this was produced by a highly skilled Arita workshop specializing in revivalist Nabeshima and Imari wares for the wealthy domestic and export exhibition markets.
Condition & Value
The charger appears to be in excellent structural condition with vibrant enamels and intact gilding. Minor kiln dust spots and typical wear on the unglazed foot rim are present, which is consistent with age. The original wooden box helps preserve its value.
