Overview
These are rare, octagonal brass advertising tokens (jetons) from the historic Parisian department store precursor, Maison Dupetit St. Thomas. Located at 25 Rue du Bac, this establishment specialized in luxury textiles, silks, and novelties ('Toiles, Soieries et Nouveautés'). These tokens served as both promotional pocket pieces and internal store currency during a period of rapid commercial expansion in Paris.
Story
In 1830s Paris, shopping was transformed from a chore into a sensory spectacle. These brass tokens were handed to wealthy patrons at 25 Rue du Bac, enticing them to browse the latest silks and imported novelties. They are physical survivors of the very birth of modern retail therapy.
Maker / Origin
Maison Dupetit St. Thomas was one of Paris's premier early 19th-century novelty shops (magasins de nouveautés), which paved the way for the grand department stores like Le Bon Marché. Situated in the fashionable Saint-Germain-des-Prés quarter, the shop was celebrated for its high-quality fabrics and innovative marketing, including the distribution of these elegant octagonal jetons.
Condition & Value
The tokens are in very good antique condition with a beautiful, authentic aged brass patina. There is minor surface wear and soft softening of the high points of the lettering consistent with being carried in a pocket, which actually enhances their historical charm. No major corrosion or deep gouges are visible.
