Overview
An elegant Japanese porcelain dish decorated in the classic Iro-Nabeshima style, featuring a vibrant underglaze blue and overglaze red enamel design of a blooming peony in a vase. The reverse side features the characteristic Nabeshima comb-tooth pattern (kushigozure) on the high footring and classic underglaze blue jewel motifs on the exterior walls.
Story
Developed in the 17th century, Nabeshima ware was originally produced under strict clan monopoly exclusively as presentation gifts for the Shogun and feudal lords. This twentieth-century revival piece captures that elite, aristocratic aesthetic.
Maker / Origin
While early Nabeshima was produced at the official Nabeshima clan kiln in Okawachiyama, modern revivals are crafted by highly skilled Arita workshops. These artisans preserve the painstaking techniques of underglaze cobalt painting combined with delicate overglaze enameling.
Condition & Value
The dish appears to be in excellent condition with no visible chips, cracks, or hairline fractures. The overglaze red enamel remains vibrant with minimal wear, and the accompanying wooden box is well-preserved. Excellent condition like this helps maintain the upper end of the value range.
