Overview

This mid-century gold-tone brooch features a stylized grape cluster set with vibrant fuchsia and violet aurora borealis glass rhinestones. Marked '©BSK' on the reverse, it showcases the era's fascination with shimmering, iridescent stones and organic botanical motifs.

Story

In 1955, Swarovski partnered with Christian Dior to invent the Aurora Borealis finish, vacuum-coating crystal with metallic vapor. Mid-century American makers like BSK immediately embraced this magical, rainbow-flashing effect.

Maker / Origin

BSK was a New York costume jewelry manufacturer active from the 1950s through the 1970s, founded by Benny Steinberg, Sloves, and Kaslo (the initials forming BSK). Known for quality gold-tone metalwork and affordable glamour, they achieved broad popularity in department stores and became famous for license pieces like their 'My Fair Lady' collection in 1964.

Condition & Value

All rhinestones appear present with bright, fiery iris reflections. The gold-tone plating shows minor age-appropriate patination on the reverse; pin mechanism is intact. Excellent overall vintage condition. BSK costume jewelry is widely collected and accessible.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
