Overview

This is a beautiful Chinese export pillow box, featuring a curved, domed lid inset with a hand-painted Famille Rose porcelain plaque. The black lacquer body is intricately decorated with gilded and red-painted auspicious symbols, including the double-joy character, bats, and gourds.

Story

Crafted in late 19th-century Canton, this box served a dual purpose: its cool, curved porcelain top supported a sleeper's neck, while the hollow, secure lacquer interior safely stored valuable jewelry and personal documents overnight.

Maker / Origin

While the specific workshop remains anonymous, this piece represents the highly coordinated export trade of Canton. Specialized porcelain painters from Jingdezhen blanks worked alongside master lacquerware gilders in coastal port workshops to create these hybrid luxury goods for Western and wealthy domestic markets.

Condition & Value

The porcelain plaque appears to be in excellent condition with no visible cracks or major enamel loss. The lacquer box shows minor wear, light scuffing, and tiny lacquer chips along the edges and corners, which is typical for organic material of this age. This honest wear does not significantly hurt the value.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
