Overview

This fine Chinese ink and color hanging scroll depicts an elegant court-style lady (meiren) standing beside two playful children (tongzi). The composition features delicate gongbi fine-line painting techniques filled with mineral pigments, showcasing intricate patterned garments, detailed hair accessories, and symbolic auspicious items like pomegranates in a toy cart.

Story

Depictions of beautiful women with children were prized auspicious gifts during late imperial China, symbolising domestic harmony and abundant descendants. The child pulling a cart of pomegranates directly reinforces the traditional wish for many sons, as the pomegranate is a classic symbol of fertility due to its abundant seeds.

Maker / Origin

Paintings of this genre were produced both by studio artists and commercial ateliers catering to prosperous households and international collectors. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Japanese art dealers frequently imported traditional Chinese figure paintings (touga) and remounted them onto Japanese silk scrolls for domestic appreciation.

Condition & Value

The painted surface shows light age-related toning, minor foxing, and creasing typical of rolled paper scrolls, but the pigments remain surprisingly vibrant and intact. The scroll mounting appears clean and stable. Overall fair to good vintage condition.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
