Overview
A fascinating hand-knotted pictorial rug replicating the famous Imperial Russian 1910 100-Ruble banknote featuring Empress Catherine the Great. Known affectionately as the 'Katyusha' note, this design was woven by Persian artisans who translated the complex engraving of paper currency into a rich, wool textile.
Story
In 1910, Russia issued its largest banknote, featuring Catherine the Great. Decades later, Persian weavers immortalized this symbol of wealth, creating a tactile crossover of currency and textile art.
Maker / Origin
While the specific workshop is unidentified, this rug belongs to a highly specialized tradition of Persian pictorial weaving (Tafrih). Weavers in urban centers like Tabriz and Kashan challenged themselves by translating complex, non-traditional graphic designs—from European paintings to foreign currency—into hand-knotted wool.
Condition & Value
The rug appears to be in very good vintage condition with even pile wear and intact selvages. There is some minor, expected fading to the field color which actually enhances its resemblance to an antique paper banknote. Excellent preservation of the fringe and borders keeps the value toward the higher end of the range.
