Overview
This is a beautifully preserved late 19th-century Victorian trade card featuring a vibrant, embossed chromolithograph of begonia blossoms on the front. The reverse side contains a fascinating, detailed advertisement for 'Modern Dentistry' by Dr. W. A. Heckard, offering services like 'Vitalized Air' for painless extractions and 'Full Gum Elegant Sets of Teeth' starting at four dollars.
Story
In the late 1800s, dentists used beautiful floral cards to mask the terrifying reality of Victorian dentistry. This card lured patients to an office above a candy kitchen with promises of 'painless' gas and elegant rubber teeth.
Maker / Origin
The Buffalo Dental Association was a multi-city dental practice group managed by Dr. G. E. Mann, with offices spanning Indiana and Ohio. The Columbus branch featured on this card was managed by Dr. W. A. Heckard, a pioneering dentist who later moved to New York and became known for his work in dental anesthesia and early orthodontics.
Condition & Value
The card is in very good antique condition. The front chromolithograph remains bright with minimal fading or scuffing, and the embossing is crisp. There is minor corner wear and light age-toning/staining on the reverse side, which is typical for paper ephemera of this age and does not significantly impact the value.
