Overview
A fascinating pair of whimsical, highly detailed wirework table ornaments depicting spiders sitting on intricate, three-dimensional webs. These delicate pieces function as place card holders or festive table decorations, showcasing the Victorian love for the natural world and eccentric novelty items.
Story
Victorian dinner parties were theatrical events where hosts used eccentric conversation starters. These wirework webs held name cards, surprising guests with a mix of gothic romance and natural science right at their plates.
Maker / Origin
While these are unsigned, they belong to a rich tradition of late-Victorian and Edwardian novelty metalwork. Specialty workshops in Birmingham, England, and parts of Germany excelled in producing these delicate, silver-plated brass and copper wire table novelties for high-end department stores.
Condition & Value
The wirework is remarkably intact with only minor bending consistent with age. There is a beautiful, dark natural patina on the copper and silver-toned wires which should not be polished away, as this aged look heavily appeals to collectors. Excellent condition overall.
