Overview
A beautifully hand-painted Japanese Kutani porcelain bowl featuring a classic narrative scene of a traveling scholar riding a donkey, accompanied by an attendant. The interior is framed by a rich, multi-colored border of clouds, waves, and geometric patterns, while the exterior displays stylized Genji-mon (Genji crest) symbols and a delicate floral band.
Story
During the Meiji era, Japanese artists captivated the West with their incredible storytelling on porcelain. This bowl depicts a wandering scholar, a classic symbol of wisdom and retirement from public life, seeking inspiration in nature. The red mark on the base reads 'Kaga Kutani tsukuru', proudly identifying its origin in the historic Kaga province.
Maker / Origin
The mark on the underside reads 'Kaga Kutani tsukuru' (Made in Kaga Kutani). Kutani ware dates back to the mid-17th century in Ishikawa Prefecture, but experienced a massive, glorious revival in the 19th century when regional workshops began producing highly detailed, gilded polychrome wares specifically for international exhibitions and global export.
Condition & Value
The bowl appears to be in very good antique condition. There is minor, expected rubbing to the gold gilding along the rim and interior details, which is typical for a piece of this age. No major chips or cracks are visible in the photos. Excellent preservation of the central enamel painting.
