Japanese Kutani Iron-Red and Gold 'Qilin' Porcelain Bowl, Meiji Period

Story

Crafted during the Meiji era, this bowl was made for a global market hungry for Japanese exoticism. The central deer and exterior Qilin are ancient symbols of peace, prosperity, and the arrival of a wise ruler. Its accompanying wooden box has protected this delicate survivor for over a century.

Maker / Origin

The mark 'Seigidō Sei' (静巽堂製 / 静異堂製) refers to a specialized workshop active during the late Edo to Meiji transition. These studios employed highly skilled painters who specialized in the painstaking 'Aka-e' (red painting) technique, which became a signature style of Kutani ware exported to the West.

Condition & Value

The bowl appears to be in very good antique condition with some expected light wear to the gilt highlights along the rim and interior. The accompanying wooden box shows a rich, authentic patina and minor wear consistent with age. Excellent preservation of the red enamel overall.
