Japanese Imari / Kinrande Style Figural Bowls (Set of 5)

Overview

A striking set of five lobed porcelain bowls decorated in the Kinrande style, featuring overglaze red enamel and liquid gold highlights. The interiors portray two elegant figures in a traditional garden pavilion setting, while the exterior features reserve medallions painted with carp and aquatic motifs against a rich iron-red ground.

Story

Kinrande translates literally to 'brocade gold work', a technique originally imported from Ming China that Japanese potters perfected in the 19th century. Having a complete set of five intact is a wonderful rarity.

Maker / Origin

Crafted in the famed porcelain kilns of the Hizen province (including Arita and Imari), these workshops specialized in multi-stage overglaze enameling. Artisans applied cobalt blue underglaze first, fired the porcelain at high temperatures, then meticulously hand-painted enamel and gold leaf for subsequent lower-temperature firings.

Condition & Value

The polychrome enamels and interior figural painting remain vibrant. Mild rubbing and wear to the gilt edges and exterior gold details consistent with age; minor stacking residue on the unglazed foot rings. Excellent condition overall for a complete set.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
