Overview
An exquisite Japanese Satsuma earthenware miniature vase featuring finely painted panels of figures in a landscape, set against a rich, deep cobalt blue ground with delicate gilt stenciling. The underside features the Shimazu family crest (a cross within a circle) and a rectangular maker's mark, characteristic of high-quality export wares from the golden age of Meiji craftsmanship.
Story
Created during Japan's Meiji era, this miniature vase was designed to dazzle Western collectors who had just discovered the country's closed borders. It packs an entire scenic world of elegant ladies and children into a vessel only a few inches tall.
Maker / Origin
The Kinkozan workshop of Kyoto was one of the most prolific and celebrated producers of Satsuma ware for the international market. Under the leadership of Kinkozan Sobei VII, the studio elevated painted earthenware to an internationally recognized art form, winning numerous awards at World's Fairs.
Condition & Value
The vase appears to be in very good antique condition. There is typical, age-appropriate crazing throughout the cream-colored glaze, and very minor rubbing to the gilt highlights on the cobalt shoulder and base rim. No visible chips, cracks, or restorations are apparent.
