Overview
A set of four exquisite hand-painted narrative panels on paper, executed in the traditional Yamato-e style of the Tosa School. These scenes depict aristocratic court life, featuring classic architectural cutaway perspectives (fukinuki yatai), stylized 'line-for-eye, hook-for-nose' (hikime kagibana) facial features, and gold leaf/dust clouds.
Story
Created during a time when Japan's elite romanticized the ancient Heian court, these panels capture the secret, highly stylized world of imperial nobility. The cutaway roofs allow us to spy on intimate courtly interactions, while the ox-drawn carriage outside hints at a dramatic arrival or departure.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, these paintings are executed in the manner of the Tosa School, which served as the official painters to the imperial court for centuries. Tosa artists were the guardians of the classical Yamato-e style, specializing in literary illustrations characterized by flat color fields, precise linework, and rich gold accents.
Condition & Value
The panels show signs of having been removed from a previous mount (such as a screen or scroll), with significant adhesive residue, paper loss, and tearing on the reverse sides. The painted surfaces show moderate wear, minor creasing, and water staining/discoloration, particularly along the left edges.
