Overview
A beautiful set of four Japanese shikishi (square painting boards) depicting classical landscapes, including the sacred island of Chikubushima. Executed in the elegant Rinpa style, these paintings feature delicate mineral pigments and dramatic clouds of hand-applied gold leaf dust (sunago).
Story
Chikubushima, the tiny island depicted here rising from Lake Biwa, has been revered for over a thousand years as a dwelling place of the gods. These panels once whispered stories of poetry and pilgrimage to Edo-period elites.
Maker / Origin
While the specific artist remains unidentified, the style strongly aligns with the Rinpa school, a major historical movement in Japanese art. Rinpa artists were known for their vibrant use of gold, stylized natural motifs, and literary themes, often collaborating with calligraphers to merge literature and visual art.
Condition & Value
The panels show signs of age consistent with the Edo period, including minor toning, light creasing, and wear along the edges. There is some minor loss to the gold leaf and pigment, and the reverse calligraphy paper shows some historical staining and backing remnants. This wear is typical and does not severely detract from the value.
