Overview
A charming pair of English ironstone teacups and saucers featuring the 'Staffordshire Bouquet' pattern, characterized by vibrant multi-colored floral sprays on a scalloped, fluted body. These pieces utilize a sophisticated transferware technique where the design is taken from a hand-engraved copper plate and applied to the durable ceramic.
Story
The 1970s saw a massive revival of traditional English garden aesthetics. Johnson Brothers met this demand by creating 'detergent proof' ironstone that brought the elegance of 18th-century engravings into modern, busy kitchens.
Maker / Origin
Founded in 1883 by four brothers, Johnson Brothers became one of the most successful exporters of English pottery to America. They were pioneers of 'White Granite' or ironstone, a material so tough it earned them a Royal Warrant from the Queen and the Queen Mother.
Condition & Value
The pieces appear to be in excellent vintage condition with vibrant colors and no visible chips or cracks. The glaze remains bright, which is essential for ironstone value. Excellent condition commands a premium. Value is based on the set of two.
