Overview
A large, finely detailed Chinese hanging scroll painting on silk depicting an elegant imperial garden scene with figures, architecture, and blossoming trees. It bears the signature and seal of the legendary Jesuit court painter Giuseppe Castiglione (Lang Shining), along with apocryphal Qianlong Emperor collection seals at the top.
Story
In 1715, an Italian Jesuit missionary arrived in Beijing and completely transformed Chinese court art. Giuseppe Castiglione blended European three-dimensional perspective with traditional Chinese ink-and-silk brushwork, creating a style so beloved by the Qianlong Emperor that it sparked centuries of later tribute paintings like this one.
Maker / Origin
Giuseppe Castiglione (1688–1766), known in China as Lang Shining, served as a court painter to three Qing dynasty emperors. His unique fusion of Western realism—particularly in light, shadow, and perspective—with Chinese materials created a highly prestigious court style.
Condition & Value
The painting shows some horizontal creasing and minor staining consistent with age and rolling. The silk mounting appears intact but shows light wear. Excellent preservation of the pigment colors. Condition issues are typical for a scroll of this age and do not severely impact its decorative value.
