Overview
A whimsical set of four hand-carved wooden napkin rings featuring a whale, a duck, a pig, and a squirrel. These pieces are crafted from solid teak or a similar tropical hardwood, showcasing the minimalist, organic lines characteristic of Danish Modern design.
Story
Danish Modern design took the world by storm in the 1960s, but it wasn't all serious furniture. These 'table pets' brought a sense of hygge and humor to the minimalist home. The whale, with its iconic profile, was the superstar of this whimsical movement.
Maker / Origin
While many of these sets were unbranded imports from Denmark or Thailand, some were produced by boutique American workshops like 'Whale Works' in California. They followed the tradition of designers like Kay Bojesen, who believed that functional objects should also possess a soul and a sense of play.
Condition & Value
The wood appears well-preserved with a healthy patina. There is a small dark inclusion on the whale's side, which is a natural feature of the wood grain rather than damage. Excellent condition overall with no visible chips to the delicate tails or ears. Regular oiling will keep the wood from drying out.
