Story
In 1870, John Wesley Hyatt—the same man who invented celluloid—founded a company in Albany that would revolutionize the nursery. Before these 'embossed' blocks, most toy letters were simply painted on and would quickly wear away under the rigors of childhood play.
Maker / Origin
The Embossing Company was the premier American manufacturer of wooden toys for over 80 years, known for their 'Toys that Teach' motto.
Condition & Value
The wood shows a warm, authentic patina consistent with nearly a century of use. There is typical softening of the box corners and some darkening of the wood, but the embossed designs remain crisp. The presence of the original box significantly preserves the value despite the surface wear. Excellent condition commands a premium.

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.
