Overview

This is a splendid large porcelain charger decorated in the vibrant Imari palette, featuring a central basket of flowers surrounded by complex reserves. The underside bears an apocryphal six-character Chinese Kangxi mark (大清康熙年製), a common practice among Japanese and later Chinese porcelain kilns producing for export.

Story

In 17th and 18th-century Europe, Japanese porcelain became the ultimate luxury status symbol among royalty. Japanese kilns often painted Chinese reign marks on their work as an homage to famous Chinese porcelain styles.

Maker / Origin

Produced by skilled artisans in Arita, the historic heartland of Japanese porcelain production. Arita potters perfected high-fired porcelain decorated with underglaze cobalt blue and rich overglaze enamel colors like iron-red and gold, creating a style that captivated global trade routes for centuries.

Condition & Value

Appears to be in very good condition with bright enamels and intact gilding trim. No obvious chips or cracks visible in photos. Excellent overall preservation commands strong collector interest. Value is driven by size, painterly detail, and condition.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues

Best Venue

Specialty auction or a focused dealer with buyers already in this lane.
