Overview
A striking pair of French Neo-Grec candlesticks featuring intricate champlevé enamel work on brass, accented by polished alabaster bulbs and bases. The design showcases a classic Greek key (meander) border and vibrant polychrome enamels in turquoise, cobalt, and oxblood red.
Story
Parisian foundries in the 1870s were obsessed with the 'Neo-Grec' style, a romantic reimagining of ancient Greece. These pieces brought the 'Grand Tour' aesthetic into the Victorian home, blending industrial precision with ancient motifs like the Greek key.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, these are consistent with the high-quality output of Parisian firms like Ferdinand Barbedienne or H. Journet. Barbedienne was known as the 'Gutenberg of Bronze' for his ability to mass-produce museum-quality art for the rising middle class.
Condition & Value
The enamel appears largely intact with vibrant colors. The alabaster shows minor natural veining; check for hairline cracks or 'flea bites' on the base edges. The felt on the underside is a later addition to protect furniture. Condition is excellent for the age.
