Overview
This is a beautiful matching pair of antique apothecary or utility bottles featuring a striking, naturally turned lavender-amethyst hue. The bases are embossed with the distinctive 'M' inside a diamond, identifying them as historic vessels from the famous Mellin's Food Company. They are topped with gorgeous, hand-faceted geometric glass stoppers that catch the light beautifully.
Story
Before the 1915 embargo, American glassmakers used imported German manganese to clarify glass. Left in the sun, a chemical reaction permanently turned these clear bottles into this breathtaking, romantic shade of violet.
Maker / Origin
Mellin's Food Company was founded by English chemist Gustav Mellin in the mid-19th century, producing a widely popular infant formula. The company's American branch in Boston packaged their products in high-quality glass vessels that have since become highly collectible relics of early American advertising and pharmacy history.
Condition & Value
The bottles appear to be in very good antique condition with no major cracks or large chips visible. There is minor surface wear on the bases and ground joints of the stoppers consistent with age. The presence of matching stoppers in good condition greatly preserves their value.
