Overview
This is a stunning pink 'Elegant Glass' console bowl featuring Fostoria's highly sought-after 'Versailles' plate etching (No. 274). Unlike cheap machine-pressed glass of the era, this piece was hand-pressed, fire-polished, and acid-etched to achieve its brilliant clarity and intricate, French-inspired scrollwork.
Story
Introduced in 1928, this pattern brought the opulence of the French court into American homes during the darkest days of the Great Depression. It was a brilliant, affordable luxury that offered families a sparkling escape at the dinner table.
Maker / Origin
Founded in Fostoria, Ohio, in 1887 before moving to Moundsville, West Virginia, Fostoria Glass Company became the premier maker of American 'Elegant Glass'. They were famous for hiring top-tier designers and utilizing complex acid-etching techniques that rivaled European imports. Their pieces were so respected they were used as official glassware in the White House.
Condition & Value
The glass appears to have excellent clarity with no major cloudiness or 'sick glass' syndrome. There are no obvious large chips or cracks visible in the photos, though the rim and foot ring should be felt by hand for tiny flea bites.
