Overview
A magnificent, large-scale Japanese porcelain charger decorated in the classic Imari palette of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron red, and lavish gold gilt. The central scene depicts a narrative landscape with scholarly figures, attendants, and flying cranes beneath a dramatic, gnarled pine tree.
Story
Created during Japan's dynamic Meiji era, this charger features a majestic pine tree and soaring cranes, which are ancient symbols of longevity and marital fidelity. The figures below represent scholars receiving gifts, a scene meant to wish the owner a long, prosperous, and intellectually rich life.
Maker / Origin
The reverse is marked with a three-character underglaze blue signature reading '嘉寿製' (Kaju-sei / Made by Kaju). This mark is associated with one of the many skilled workshops operating in the Arita region, the historic birthplace of Japanese porcelain, which specialized in high-quality export wares for the Western market.
Condition & Value
The front display surface shows excellent preservation of the gold gilding and enamel work with minimal rubbing. The reverse shows some typical kiln grit, minor surface dirt, and wear to the unglazed foot rim. The wire hanger should be removed carefully to ensure it hasn't scratched or chipped the rim.
