Overview
This is a charming double-sided personal pocket mirror featuring traditional Indian 'Lippan Kaam' (clay and mirror relief) style decoration. One side displays a central circular mirror, while the reverse is adorned with an intricate geometric mosaic of diamond-cut mirrors, seed beads, and metallic gold-toned resin composite.
Story
Centuries ago, women in the desert region of Kutch, India, began decorating their mud homes with clay and mirrors to reflect precious candlelight. This pocket-sized treasure scales down that ancient architectural art so you can carry a piece of desert starlight in your purse.
Maker / Origin
While likely created by an artisan workshop in Western India for the export or tourist market, this piece keeps the traditional craft of Lippan art alive. Historically, women of the Rabari community passed these geometric design layouts down through generations, using wild ass dung, clay, and hand-blown glass shards.
Condition & Value
The pocket mirror is in very good vintage condition. All of the tiny seed beads and diamond-shaped mirror tiles appear intact on the decorative side, and the main mirror glass on the reverse shows only minor surface dust and light scuffing consistent with gentle handling.
