Overview

This magnificent ceramic bowl is a classic piece of Zhangzhou export ware, known in Japan as *Gosu Akae*. It features dynamic hand-painted iron-red and green overglaze enamels showing bold floral patterns and freehand calligraphy, preserved alongside its traditional fitted Japanese wooden collector's box (*tomobako*).

Story

In the 16th century, coastal Fujian potters crafted vibrant export wares directly for maritime trade networks across Southeast Asia and Japan. Japanese tea masters fell madly in love with their rustic, expressive charm. They embraced these unpretentious vessels into Chanoyu tea ceremonies, forever preserving them in custom fitted wooden boxes like the one sitting right beside this bowl.

Maker / Origin

Zhangzhou kilns operated as private commercial workshops in southern China, outside imperial control. Free from rigid court standards, the artisans painted with rapid, spontaneous brushwork that felt deeply alive. Their pieces were shipped through ports like Moon Harbor (Yuegang), earning a legendary status among international collectors under the trade name 'Swatow ware'.

Condition & Value

The overglaze enamels retain remarkable color intensity. Typical light rim wear and minor glaze imperfections consistent with 17th-century export production. The accompanying fitted wooden box shows authentic age patina.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
